When people teach you their so-called “real” ways to make money online, what you get is often an untruth. They don’t lie to you on purpose. I know that, because I’ve been guilty of telling the same falsehood myself, without even knowing it.

However, once I got the mud washed out of my eyes, and I saw clearly, I felt that it was absolutely necessary to tell you about this.

And when I said they told you a lie, this is not the truth, either. It’s just maybe not the best way of doing things.

They All Say: Find Yourself A Narrow Niche

When they teach you how to make money online, they all say: Find yourself a narrow niche. Don’t choose “pets”, but “clicker training for cats” or something really narrow.

Well, yes, this might work, if the sub niche is big enough, but oftentimes, you’ll find yourself gaining very little, while putting in a lot of effort.

I can understand their arguments, and I’ve been teaching them myself. Instead of choosing a large niche like “pets”, “dating”, or even “internet marketing”, where you’ll be a very tiny fish in a huge dam, you should rather find a small pit and be the big tuna in there.

Yes, it’s easier to build a name and reputation in a narrow niche, but does that help you, if the money is not in there?

My Money Making Niches Have All Been Broad

Sometimes, it pays off to take a step back and get a big overview. I did that a while ago. I checked my income, and I thought: What do my money making sites have in common?

And I found out something very surprising to me. They had one thing in common: They were very broad niches.

My best performing site is about tips for the Internet or computer. It could almost not get any broader than that. Another well accomplishing site is about writing. About how to become an author and make money writing. Not exactly a narrow niche, either.

Why Don’t The Gurus Tell You To Go Wide?

Because the gurus know that you want money now! Not tomorrow, not in a week, and certainly not only after four years.

So they give you what you think you want: fast income.

Even so, this is not steady and long term income. So we have two real ways to make money online: Choosing a narrow or a wide niche. If you want to make a living online, choosing a large niche over a narrow, might be the way to go, even if it takes longer to get a break-through.
